About This Course

This course focuses on the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, which have never been more visible in the international arena than now. The attempts to put sexual orientation and gender identity in the agenda for inclusion in human rights instruments are starting to succeed. However, in many countries, homophobia is rising and it is crucial to stop that. Moreover, this course analyzes the tensions and debates related to sexual rights and gender justice.

1. What is sexual orientation and gender identity

2. Rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people

3. Debates about the relationship between sexual rights and gender justice

4. Tensions between universalist constructions of gay/trans identity

5. Local formations of sexual and gender nonconformity

6. Legacies of colonialism
